The Market Musical
The award-winning writing team of Donna Rae Davidson and Rob Jones, who brought you "Claudia Kelly's 500 Hats" and "Women With Balls," have joined with Unexpected Productions, the resident theater company at the Market Theater, to produce The North Arcade, which will open July 4th, 2007. This light-hearted revue is a musical history of the Craft community, who have colorfully contributed to the survival of Pike Place Market for the past forty years. Just as the market is cited as the "Soul of Seattle," this celebratory musical reminds us that it is the people and their stories who are the real heart of Pike Place Market. Songs from The North Arcade are already creating a buzz in and around Seattle. Children of the Market is currently being made into a music DVD by Visual Media Inc., It's Gotta Be Handmade is quickly becoming the official theme song of the day-stallers (crafters and farmers), and Real Change was recently performed for 400 people at the Real Change Newspaper fundraiser breakfast. The December 2006 Reading December 11 was a stormy Monday, and yet we had a great turnout for our first workshop/reading of Act I. Nearly half of the audience stayed for a lively discussion, and a score of questionnaires were filled out. We learned a lot about the piece and are inspired to move forward! The North Arcade Act One Songs This reading was sponsored in part by a grant from The Mayor's Office of Arts & Culture.
The March 2007 Reading
The March 12 event began with an invitation-only cocktail party, followed by a workshop/reading performed for a full house. The cast was awesome, with many members returning from the December reading. Much of the audience stayed for the discussion, and gave excellent feedback. A fun, exciting, and productive night! Fundraiser/Dance at WA Dance Club
Christa Hinshaw, owner/operator/amazing dance instructor opened the doors of The Washington Dance Club Saturday, March 24, 2007 for a dance party/fundraiser to benefit The North Arcade. Early attendees received an hour of instruction on swing dancing and the fox trot. Guests were treated to live entertainment by MC David Koch, a dance exhibition by John Yantis and Katie Lake, and of course, musical performances from The North Arcade by the cast. Oh - and there was lots of dancing too! All proceeds from the party are directly supporting the production of The North Arcade. Thank you Christa, and all of our volunteers for helping make this event happen! |
